and they need AT LEAST a 12x8x3

thats 3000 gallons. They need heat as well.

What goes through peoples minds when they say 300 gallons? 300 gallons is so small, and rtc's can get over 18in the the first couple months. You would need to start with a 3000. Why not choose a better fish, i mean its a catfish after all. Garbage fish from where i come from, try a tigrinis in an aquarium.

if u want a cat that get about 16" get a Lima shovel nose catfish.

People should not talk about "if you want to keep it for life", do not buy a fish like a RTC if you cannot keep it for life, who else is going to keep the 4 ft Cat that you bought without a long term view.

I love RTC's but I would prefer them to be banned as 100's suffer for the one that gets looked after well/

ya its a fish u wanna stay away from if ur not prepared to do it now cuz chances are if ur not prepared for it, u wont ever be. the food bill gets real heavy quick, and on top of that they are super messy and will pretty much destroy ur water conditions. u need excellent filtration and theres more money ur gonna have to spend. and of course, tank mates are pretty much not realistic unless u have LOTS of room because it WILL eat anything it can grab meaning anything u keep with it will have to be just as big as he is. i have seen people keep smaller fish, but they all had HUGE ponds or in one video i saw, they used a pool as their pond.

backoff people. all i ever seem to see is someone ask a question then everyone jump on them trying to tell them why they should not get these fish. he has asked for help so lets start helping and stop with the digs.. hi dave. question.1 1000g should be ok for 1 rtc its all down to the foot print really. but like everything bigger is better so the more room you can give the fish the happier it will be. question .2 heating the pond is not cheep i use a 6 kw heater made by santon but a 3 kw will do the job. if you make a lid for the pond for when you dont want to view your fish this will help to keep the cost down as will insulating the pond. it is a lot of hard work and a big responsibility . but it is all worth it . good luck

i live in england too, i would suugest a 5,000 litre tank but they are very hard to find so make one yourself, or get and indoor pond since the weather isnt good enough then you can place some heaters.
