RTC tiger shovelnose cross

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would buy one in a heartbeat, but It seems harder to find than a planiceps. There is one memeber that has some pics of some larger rtc x tsn on here somewhere. I remember seeing it a while back. They looked huge and awesome. Like a green rtc with lots of spots. They were very thick bodied. here's a pic of a large pseudoplatystoma tigrinum. i think if you put it in a low lite tank and took the pic from above you would pretty much get the tsn in the second pic! I wasn't trying to belittle you so that you know I just thought it was amazing reading this post again and seeing how much more we all know now!

Hmmm looking at your pic again maybe it's a tsn hybrid after all! I didn't see the spots on it's belly might just be withing the genus pseudoplatystoma. Like maybe P. tigrinum x P. corruscans. If it is a hybrid it is that one, but hybrids within the same genus like this are sometimes still fertile because they are so closely related. Awesome pic by the way. How's the sausage(e-cat) doin? I know they get huge in the wild, but i wanna see a monster one in captivity. So far the biggest I have seen is 12" but I haven't really seen that many lol!

I bought one of these guys about 6-8 weeks ago and i'll tell you he's lazy as hell. He really only moves when he's after food...and that's only if the food comes within 2" of his mouth. I bought him @ about 3" and he's pushing 7" right now. He's been growing extremely fast and I was told that they'll reach lengths of around 5'. He's pretty easy to care for and will eat anything in the tank (except meal worms) that lies on the bottom or swims near him. I have a Clown knife and a Royal knife in the same tank and they all get along fine. No squabbles or fighting over territory thus far. I just hope it stays this way their whole lives...

not to put a damper on your spirits dirty old man, but I highly doubt they will get along that well for very long. There are rare instances where large catfish live in harmony with smaller fish, but it will eventually catch up to you. If you are talking about the rtc x tsn hybrid, if properly fed and housed he will grow to about 20-26 inches in his first year, and probably to about 28-33 inches in his second year. Let's hope your knifes can grow that fast also. there are many many threads in here where people's rtc or tsn eat their knife fish of the same or larger size of the cat. The problem is that the knife is such a slender bodied fish that it fits perfectly in the cat's mouth even when larger than the cat itself. I would suggest that when the cat looks as if the knifes will fit in his mouth seperate them or risk losing one. I applaud you on your purchase of this cat, and hope he brings you as much happiness as mine has brought me. Have you tried hand feeding or petting it yet? I do it with mine all the time! Good luck my fellow cat man!

I wish I could find a larger tigrinum that size thats showing a good pattern like the pic you posted it has amazing color! Any ideas where I might be able to find one of those beasties?

Unfortunately the E cat is no longer with me... RIP Jimmy. I changed the sig recently though because I'm about to start growing a couple babies out in the 20 Gallon :) Hopefully I'll be picking up 2-3 of the little guys in a couple weeks right now I'm spending to much on a new driftwood and plant setup for the 240. That E cat was the coolest catfish I ever kept very personable like a RTC is and always hungry, I should have a huge E cat eventually because I'm planning a E cat specific big tank sometime in the next year when I'm back in Dallas and have the space for one. I would love to see a 18-24"er in captivity and possibly try to breed them at some point. sorry for the off topic responses ~Trent

Not so sure where to get a big one like that. Best bet is to raise one out yourself. Just no garuntees on how the pattern will come out. I think the E-cat tank will be a great idea. I have allways wanted one(along with every other species of catfish), but I was allways worried about having to keep a tank for just one fish. I think for now I am going to continue my pimelodidae collection. See just how many species I can get. I eventually want to do a huge pimelodidae pond for the big boys and use some smaller ponds to house the smaller species according to their size! Good luck with your future plans. You might try posting that you would like a large tigrinum on the buy and sell forum to see if anyone has one that has outgrown their tank!

I heard a story before where a fish keeper has 5 redtail breeding pond and left 2 tsn in with them because he had nowere to put them and 5-6 month latter i got 2-3'inch hybrids of there parents.

I don't like it when people accuse of hating a basterd man made fish, like the parrot fish.

the only way to consider it man made if some one took raw fish eggs and raw fish sperm from another different fish and mix them and put them back into the tank and let it grow.

in this case we don't know exactly how tsn and rtc breed there is no asact recording of these two spescie ever recording or document unlike the fire mouth chiclid we know how it breeds and so we can do take the eggs and a putt in with a different fish sperm an wolla!

Don't try this at home!:banher: :banhim: It can be a bad habit for nature...

Has anyone seen Red tail cat/tiger shovelnose crosses showing up in fish stores lately? Are they bred like blood parrots? I wonder if these fish are are naturally breeding or if they are test tube fish. Sorry if this has been already discussed.

becuase if everyone start doing things like this it would end up being an epidemic.
