So I was considering setting up a rubbermaid 300 gallon stock tank and one of the fish I would like to stock it with is either a RTC/TSN cross or a RTC. Now I know the stock tank wont be large enough to house one of these fish for life but roughly how long are we talking before having to up the ante again? I dont know if I could upgrade within a couple years after the 300 so do you all think I could house one of these fish happily in the 300 for maybe 4-5 years or will I have to look for an upgrade within a few years or so?

I would say the 300 rubbermaid would work for 3-4 years, maybe 5 if you have excellent filtration...

With the standard RTC you could bet on a couple- maybe as many as 4-5 years. The hybrid... I'm not sure that anyone could say with complete certainty. But based on what I've seen here you should expect it to be 27"+ within 2 years. And I don't think there has been signs of slowed growth even at that length.

With the hybrid being pretty new to the hobby, I don't think that a maximum length has been determined, so I would go so far as to say that there is no way to plan on a lifetime sized tank for them. Perhaps just a lifetime sized pond.

yeh u shud be fine considering that the larger the fish grow (ie. 2 foot plus) the less they actually swim....so even if there is not thatttttttt much swimming space, its not the end of the world...until night time of course cause even my fat 40'' RTCs become hyperactive looking for food! but yeh it shud last 4-5 years with a small risk of the fish being stunted...both these fish can get amazinglingly large...shame to hinder the growth...

like 5 years now..i got them wen they were ABOUT 5 inches long...so they r probably slightly older than 5 years....my largest RTC is 1 year younger than the smaller one...just goes to show that all RTCs grow at different rates...:s

yeh but dont 4get that i kept my RTC in an 8 foot tank....then even b4 he reached 10 inches i threw him in the pond....so fish tend to grow hyper fast in huge spaces...plus i trained him to handfeed so he doesnt get tooooo much exercise. but ure right...i tended to overfeed him EVERYDAY wen he was young...RTCs dont need to be fed thatttttt often...
