rtc vs chanel cats vs niger catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my rtc's grew 3-4" a month when small, my niger has grown about 1-2" in 2 months. the rtc eats way more and is a very agressive feeder compared to the niger. i do not see them growing faster then a rtc at all. when i got my niger 2 months ago he was 6" long now 8".
i got my 2 rtc's 1 month ago both at 3" and one is 8" and the other is 7". i feed them worms and shrimp. the niger brine shrimp, veggi crisps, and black worms. i do 25% weekly water changes and they are in the same tank. so if i am doing something wrong with my niger please tell me what it is.

seems like everyone has different experiences which is fine....the biggest two of my four nigers are about 30 inches and they are one year old......the one rtc i had didnt grow that fast....but every tank is different and every fish is different... viva la differance

yeah but you raise mutant fish :grinno:

I think you've had those guys longer than that John... are you sure you didn't just forget about them for awhile... I mean that tank of yours is like it's own lake

i doubt you are doing anything wrong........... mine eat an amazing amount of sinking hikari gold or other sinking pellets..........they are always hungry and the tank is kept at 83-84 F. they are usually feed twice a day.

the niger at ocean blue loves to be hand fed pellets.....sucks them right off your hand :)

My guess is tank size..filtration... food wise and also temperature play a part...not forgetting the fish itself... I remember keeping a few catfish and in the same batch got 1 with abnormal growth rate...the rest same size while one is very big cos it eat non stop... just like human some mature faster some become taller

Hmm, never owned a niger so can't comment, but my RTC definitely outgrew my channel. Another thing is channels get 3'-4'. Here's a pic of the record which was a giant by any standars, but still a representative. My channel has grown from 2" to 24" in about 1 year 10 months. My rtc has grown from 1.5" to 26" in about 1 year 4 months. I fully expect my rtc will be bigger than 30" by the end of his second year. He shows no signs of slowing. redtailnobs' rtc has grown from 3" to almost 10" in just two months. I've told him to feed away as it's comming to my tank for a while and will need the size. I've got him doing twice weekly water changes, and daily feedings so long as there's no bump in the RTC belly. I'll be trying to get a niger myself sometime in the near future though. Growth sounds impressive on the nigers. Sounds like they get huge quick and then slow down. RTC get huge quick and theirs tappers off over time. Being grown in 10,000 gals is going to make any fish grow huge quick because the full quality of life is so much better. I bet you could get a RTC to over 30" in the first year in your tank John. Just my opinion anyway. Don't leave channels out though they do get massive. Biggest niger I have ever heard of is 75 lbs. SO probably goes like this

RTC 150 lbs
Niger 75 lbs
Channel 58 lbs.

There's the max sizes I've actually seen pics for all three of the sizes here.
