RTC with bichirs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My RTC at both of my Bichirs that were 2"+ bigger than it! the RTC just sat with the back end of the Bichir hanging out of its mouth for 2 days till it was able to digest it, then it ate the other as soon as the first one was no longer visible. I was stupid for thinking that because the 2nd Bichir was bigger that it wouldn't get it, not the case. Those fish should never share a tank with ANY fish that it is capable of fitting in its mouth.

It may eat / attempt to eat the bichir now or later. Bichirs are of good swallow-able shape. RTCs are also known for digesting their prey part-by-part when they cannot fit the whole thing in their stomach but can swallow and fit part of it.

"swallow-able shape" hahahaha that word...should be in the dictionary man! Cracks me up all the time. I always use that term when im looking for tank mates for my gulper cat" hahahaha :D:D

Yeah, it'd be a useful word in our universe of MFKers :)

Well put, Oddball. And KeefO, great to see solid data. Thanks.

Here's some solid data:

On the menu: CK, silver aro, red devil, LMB, sturgeon...

Great little collection, Oddball. Will be appreciated by many. If I read between the lines: sorry I was curt, by "solid" I meant that KeefO's data were precisely about the RTC eating bichirs and the fish being of the relevant sizes too to the OP question.

RTC don't have tank mates just future meals. I've wanted one for a very long time but i don't have the money or space for a tank big enough for one. The only thing they should be kept with is other large catfish or rays IMO. I've heard a story of a 20 inch arowana being devoured by these guys and that is one expensive feeder fish.

Jim, the manager of "The Fish Place", Buffalo NY, once told me that at some point a third aro of ~2.5'-3' was added to their 2000 gal exhibit tank, per prior owner condition of "donation".

Next morning it was sticking out of the mouth of one of their ~3' RTC. Partial digestion took place as usual.

The original two silver aros that the RTCs grew up with (from ~3") the RTCs never touched.

This is the tank and one of the original surviving RTCs: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...l-plus-Niger-and-TSN&highlight=The+Fish+Place
