RTC with Gill Curl ??????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
don't do that you'll damadge its gills and theres no need for the massive amount of stress that brings plus it would have a scare just keep the water clean and give it a good diet and eventually it should grow out of it and go back to normal

the gill curl is from being in too small of tank for too long. the more the fish has to swim backwards the more the curl. unless im wrong that cat looks mature for its size, another sign of too small tank is stunt growth. keep a close eye out on your water and his needs and he will start getting bigger and the gill plates will be just fine.they may not look 100%but they will be functional. DO NOT CUT YOUR FISH!!! just give him space food and clean water:) he could be your biggest fish for sure.good luck

Gill Curl has nothing to do with the size of the tank, it is as of yet unknown as to why RTC's get it however the general reasearch seems to show that it's a PH related issue. This is a young RTC and the gill curl IS NOT GOING TO GO AWAY!!! HOWEVER it will look better as the fish grows and may actually get alittle better (not totally)

Since this RTC was recieved like this it's safe to say that it was an issue with the holding tank at the LFS or during shipping. Best Practices are still to continue with your water changes monitor your water perameters and ensure the best water quality you can possiby provide. Unfortunatly RTC's are prone to Gill Curl and there isn't much to do about it except keep the water quality top notch (which should be everyone's practice to begin with) Other types of fish will hold up better to changes in water quality but this seems to be the weak point of the RTC.

Thanks for the info guys, i won't try and cut it i'll just keep an eye on him and give him the best water quality....

You now have your own thread in the catfish section. Please direct all questions to your personal thread.
