You're right on about panaques putting out a lot of waste. I solved that problem by using a bead filter rated to 1200gals with fish as opposed to using a filter rated only for the 300gal size of the tank. An added bonus is this filter has a backwash capability which I put to good use once a week. I use a pool pre-filter leaf screen to catch the major portion of ground up driftwood my panaque chews up. It always looks like yesterdays coffee grounds in that screen box.

I got what you meant by beaded filter (media in side) but what do you mean " with fish" ??? . I've seen crayfish in some over flow type filter's! :thumbsup:

It's a pond filter that's rated for 1200gals with a bio-mass (fish) or 2000gals for a non-fish decorative pond (no bio-mass).

The OceanClear 354 model filter has a backwash feature for easy (non-opening) canister cleaning. There are 3 ball valves on the filter. Close the outlet and inlet valves and open the chamber valve to backwash. Hook up a garden hose to the dump valve fitting and open the dump valve. Now, all the sludge is drained from the bottom of the filter's chamber and the filter is clean. Reverse the valves back to original positions and the filter is running normally again.
