DWA no longer takes large cats because of irresponsible folks and their monster 75 gal tanks bro. they actually aren't taking anything at the moment.

I dont understand what you are getting at? Im not giving anything to them. Hes been in there for 4 years

You're probably right, most won't get the home they need to live a happy life. But at least on here we can advise people what they will need to house one if they buy one and aren't sure or don't know, like the op of this thread.

I look at the 1000gal i'm building so i can get my fish out of my paddling pool and i know that one day i will need to build bigger still as a 4'+ Hybrid will be a little cramped. There is a sticky in the catfish forum that covers rtc, tsn, and rtcxtsn and their minimum requirements, and hybrids grow faster and larger than either the tsn or rtc. 6' is a possibility. Describe to me a 700gal that could house a fish that size?

And yes you did do the right thing for YOUR tsn, but the right home to start with would have involved him not ending up in a public aquarium. Unfortunatly most people don't realise what the cute little tsn will turn into when they buy them and only the lucky ones will end up somewhere like that and not suffering.

Thats completely fine. If I could i would advise him to build a 30,000 gallon pond for him. I just know if this guy has a hybrid in a 25 gallon tank the odds of him getting a 1,000 gallon tank are very small. I also dont think there is anything wrong with keeping a fish for a couple of years in a tank thats fits that fish as a juvenile and then passing it off to someone with a bigger tank. I dont see why anyone would get mad at that. It happens all the time in our buy/sell forums

Sorry, but you sounded pretty sure on this one. It really sounds like you have picked this magic number (700) and he's not getting anything bigger.

I guess, but if you had done the most responsible thing, you'd still have him, right? I mean, there aren't enough Public Aquariums in the world to save all of these TSNs and RTCs. We have to, as aquarists, let folks know what they're getting into and provide all the resources that we can so that they can provide for the animal for life, not send him to a Public Aquarium. That's the reason I say 1,000, and it may end up being more, but you have to be open to providing that -- at the end of the day, you're the one who carried him home.

how is it irresponsible to give a catfish a 220,000 gallon home? Thats a little backwards dont you think? And the guy has this cat in a 25 gallon tank. It doesnt need a pond right now. You grow these thing up and along the way you upsize. Thats half the fun of owning fish. Watching them progress.

i think people should have to prove they have at least 1000 g tank for one of these fish before they can even take one home. i agree with everythin justone ans wet whiskers are saying. i get so fedup of the same old threads asking how big there tank needs to be for an rtc etc. people can see pictures of the size these fish can get all over the net. if your unsure that you can house one you should not have one.

is your hybrid in a 1000 gallon tank?

Upsizing for a cat that grows 2 feet in a year is very expensive. By the time he's grown, you've paid for the ultimate home two or three times before you build it.

I think I explained myself pretty well on why this wasn't the most responsible action on your part. I don't feel I need to go through it again. I write very plainly and it's hard not to understand what I mean.

You asked me a question that I had already answered. I didn't want to answer it again, but since you feel the need to be rude and insinuate that I was acting like your father, I will explain it again.

As I said before, giving your catfish to a public aquarium was a more responsible choice than allowing it to die in a tiny tank. However, the more responsible thing would have been to do what it needed in order to keep it. See, it's not really responsible if you're just passing on your bad decision to someone else because you don't want to deal with it. Sure, they had the room, but Public Aquaria fills up very quickly with big cats, Pacu, Arapaima, Nurse Sharks and the like for a reason.

Now, you have another large cat, and rather than making the decision to do whatever it needs, you've essentially set a limit on how large it can grow.

Not that it really matters to you, but I'm not a guy, and most likely have no resemblance at all to your father.

Haha touche on the dad part. Im sorry if i was rude. Trust me my catfish will be givin the home it needs. Dont worry about that.

Almost everyone in this website has fish that are too big for there pond, tanks, and 1000 gallon tanks that they own. These fish belong in the river, ocean or where ever it is they are suppose to be when in the wild. Fish are awesome to grow sometimes i look at my tank and feel bad but what can i do. have fun bro enjoy your fish
