RTC's don't have tank mates (they have meals they are saving for later)... well not for long at least... As has been said, if the little guy lasts a week he will be big enough to take out your Cichlids...
Speaking from experience... (Plenty of it actually) RTC's will take out fish bigger than themselves although they are less likly to try at a smaller size.
in a tank as small as a 55 the other fish will be fine, your rtc should not be in there long enough for him to get big enough to eat them. at least in my opinion

i have one right now, i was just trying to say that he shouldnt keep an rtc in a 55 for more then a couple weeks. ive got a 8 inch oscar and a 15 inch redtail and the oscar is boss in the tank for now.
I will never say anything about someones tank size unless the fish can't move... other than that it's all about filtration and simply the quality of the water... someone with 3000 gallon tank and poor water qualty can't keep a guppy let alone a monster.
As for your tank situation... Don't think that Oscar is in charge... he's only led to beleive that he is untill your RTC is feelin peckish... (Been there... done that!... got a t-shirt around here somewhere LOL)
i know you probably have the 1000gal you will need to keep the RTCs in already and resurched a lot before buying but you may as well put them in a 200gal now and let them strech the legs
you know what i mean people dump RTCs in small tanks hoping it will give them time to get a bigger tank its best to get the tank 1st then the RTC you can keep a few other fish with it for some time just remember they will probably be feeders at some point
why do people upgrade and upgrade and upgrage why not get the big tank 1st and save money on all the upgrades
if you add up the price of a 50gal 75gal 100gal 150gal 200gal 300gal 500gal it will cost you the same as the 1000gal needed to keep a RTC i have a 1000gal and still feel its to small for a RTC
Yeah I know what you mean... just don't think that everyone is in the position to get a 1000 tank for their 3" RTC... Should anyone ever need to get something that size or bigger... Indoor Ponds are the cheap and dirty (Quick) way of doing it... anyone that can afford to run a 100+ gallon tank can most likly afford to build a indoor Pond.
Just to comment on your price for all the small tanks compared to the large one comment... Bravo! I have well over 3X the amount tied up in small tanks than I do for my large tanks... Mind you I am a fan of growing out my fish in appropiate sized tanks (IE I did not put my 2 - 1.5" RTC's into my 1500... nore in my 500... or even my 350... or 250...or even a 150..nope I let them loose in a 90... and they are like specs in their... took me a good 2 mins to find them in their tonight... I'd have never seen them or known if they were eating if I had dropped them into the big tanks!
