Hey Ive been thinking about the rtcxparoon hybrid. I am mostly curious, but may like to try breeding them at some point.
Ive heard they are bred with a hormone to induce egg/ sperm production, then milked. Is that true?
Wouldn't it be easier to induce regular breeding conditions then milk (I'm assuming they don't want to breed)?
Is said hormone publicly available?
How big of a tank would I need (10x10)?
If I bred an albino paroon to an rtc, would the children's children have a shot at being albino?
Could the children have children?
And what are all of the rtc hybrids you know of?
I know of tsn, marble, paroon(duh) uhh...more I can't think of.
So many questions, so little time:nilly::nilly::nilly:!

hybrids are sterile. natures way of stopping this in the wild

not always the females though. Very slim-to-none the males would too.

A female hybrid can be bred with either 2 species of male that created that hybrid. (I'm not sure about the rate of fertile females but its way higher than a fertile male)

the males are always sterile very rare you would get a fertile male.

I'm gonna say never say never. Its been done before with other kind of animals.

I would personally be focusing my efforts in breeding fish that will not be there anymore for later generation children in the wild. Especially the monster ones.

What we need is some kind of MFK bio scientist that likes the idea of crossing different catfish. I've had a discussion hijacking a different thread on hybrid catfish we'd like to see in aquaria but i do believe that these hybrids are bred for their meat rather than to satisfy curious mind of the MFKer.

I did read somewhere that only 1 in 1000 eggs fertilise when they breed rtcxtsn hybrids and the further apart the 2 species of catfish are the less chance of fertilisation. Although if you do breed an albino paroonxrtc, send one my way please!;)

you cant breed them-this type of hybrid is pure "frankenscience"-true red tails ect have to be hormonally stimulated to breed in farms. things like a paroon/red tail are "test tube" fish that would be along the lines of breeding a rhino with a hippo.

why do you want the hybrids? have a look at pims on planet catfish-there are more than you may think ,many of which have been kept by very few people-contact a specialist importer and see what they can get you-why bother with hybrids if you havent kept all the natural species?

Ya thats kinda what I thought. It might take some persistence, but thats fine. If you have a female het for albino rtcxparoon, and cross it with an albino paroon, you have a 25%rtc 75% paroon thats albino. That possibility, even if it is a tiny one, is exiting.

As far as breeding endangered animals, while I agree with you, I have been thinking about getting both of these for a LONG time, and I figure might as well at least look into it. But I am seriously considering attempting it.

Satan's goldfish, Ive heard that too. That would make an albino 1/10000 eggs. Idk how many eggs these cats have, but I'm willing to risk not getting these eggs. after all, I want both of these anyways. P.S., ill be sure to get 1 to you ;). Do you know what thread it was? I would like to look at it.

By cant, do you mean shouldn't? Even if it is "frankenscience", there is nothing wrong with it. PLEASE DON'T make this a hybrid bash thread.

Does anyone know how many eggs rtc and paroons have?

Because I personally like hybrids. They display characteristics that no other fish can. Think about it. everybody chooses their fish for certain characteristics, and hybrids display unique ones. And do you really intend to keep "all the natural species"?

But that was not the point of this thread. If you have a problem with me keeping hybrids, and NEED to tell me, P.M. me. I don't want this thread to go off course.

I said cant because i meant cant as in not possible -that type of hybrid is made not bred.
im not having a go about hybrids-though i am personally against them.
what i am saying is that unless you are a genetesist you cant produce a paroon/rtc.
if you can direct me to scientific literature that says different i would be glad to read it and better my knowledge-ok?
with regards to all the pims my point is if you want something out of the ordinary there is plenty of natural stuff to go at many with more striking appearence than those more commonly available.:)
