The eggs will not get fertilized. CA and SA cichlids can not produce fry together
So I noticed my male rtm and female umbee have started to pair off and I was wondering if anyone had heard of such a cross. Or does anyone have any pics of this kind of cross? They haven't laid eggs but have been chasing fish away from one side of my tank. Just wondering what the hybrids will end up looking like

I just replied to this thread. Go look at the pics I posted.

I just seen this post, I know it's old but thought I'd share that my Male umbee spawned with my female RTM and this was the result. I did not and would not sell them, just thought some of you may be interested

Very nice looking imo. Idky ppl always have to bash hybrids but this one here is very nice. But yeah like cichlid keepers already said the other posters on this thread haven't been on since 2017 so a few years too late. Regardless tho, ya still got a very nice looking fish there and would love to have one of my own but just don't have the space for it atm.

Oh dang. I'm new on here, I've always known of this site, just never made an account. And when I seen the comment from whoever said it wasnt possible I just wanted to show them its possible. And I understand why hybrids are frowned upon in the hobby, but before you can even say you didnt sell any or give any away, theres always usually from my experience 10 people waiting to RIP you a new one hahah. This happened as a complete shock to me when I woke up to see my Male rio mag umbee from Rapps spawning with my female RTM. At the time I didnt even think the eggs would get fertilized , then low and behold about a week or 2 later I had a swarm of free swimmers. Such a unique and crazy experience. I'll post pics of my umbee as well he was a beast.

Yeah some purists really don't like hybrids especially ones that aren't the main hybrids like blood parrots or flowerhorns or red texas. It's best just to ignore them. Anyway welcome to the forum, it's always good to see new members joining when there are also so many inactive accounts, it shows the forum is still surviving.

Nice umbee! Is it a Rio mag?
Yes. And thank you. When he passed he was every bit of 21 inches. My experience with umbees, is that they are such a personable fish. They have personality. And like other cichlids, they will learn to recognize you as well. My favorite cichlid hands down, and I've kept alot. But it's a personal preference. I remember when I ordered them rapps said "now these guys aren't like other cichlids that display color right from the start. You have to be patient and maintain a healthy feeding schedule, he said they will grow like a weed but won't display fully the infamous umbee colors until they mature so dont be discouraged or feel like you're doing anything wrong if the progression in his blue coloring is slowed. It takes time, but it's worth every second ."

I really wish I had enough tank space to keep monster Cichlids like some of the other people on here. My top 3 natural Cichlids are Jaguars, Doviis, and Umbees, all of which require some of the largest tanks.

Yeah it would be nice to see more ppl get interested in creating new hybrid strains but it does take an immense amount of time and patients to get it done right. Granted I will agree that allot of ppl will knowingly sell a hybrid as a pure fish which is totally wrong. But if labeled and sold correctly purists shouldn't have a problem with it. Personally I fantasize about what certain hybrids could possibly look like.
