Around the fittings going into the bulkhead or around the bulkhead itself?

Yes - It's been a minute but I recall replacing the drain plug with a threaded 1 1/4" PVC fitting and then connected that to a 1 1/4" ball valve. I connected that to a hose connector and sump pump drain hose, which emptied out into my yard (when I opened the ball valve). The inhabitant of the tub at the time was a big African Lungfish so it worked great to drain and suck out chewed up food and lungfish poop

This is pretty much what I did. Works great as easy maintenance.

trying to find 1 1/4 inch bulkhead to replace the stock one. Cant find one that fits the space. Any recommendations?

I didn't use a bulkhead - I just used a plumbing PVC piece (available from the hardware store).

You took out the bulkhead it came with?

No - just removed the plug and added PVC. It's been about 10 years so just trying to remember
