I hate to bring this up, but just wanted to let ya'll know....everyone on this site advised me not to run carbon with my Oscars, but I did anyway...Well, they both succumbed to HOH today after being treated for several weeks. My levels were all zero and performed 50% water changes every five days. I believe that the carbon was the cause of this. :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

All levels were 0 ? should of had some nitrates. Ive been running carbon with my oscar for over a year now and havent had a problem with him . Sorry about your loss though , sucks to lose a fish

yeah thanks, both my O's and my JD...I just caught it too late, I guess

I don't believe that Carbon causes HITH. I believe that water quality and diet is the cause. Carbon does NOT filter out micronutrients including metals.

I had a varied diet including the new Hikari foods and like I said was making 50/50 water changes, water was perfect. I've kept them in the past without carbon and had no problems, not quite sure what else it was. Unless they had it when I bought them, they were only a few months old.....

I've been told to remove the carbon while treating.

well....id hate to say it but...... we told ya so.....

Sorry for your losses maybe in the future you might take things we say in to account?

Carbon would have nothing to do with HITH. That is stricltly from poor water quality. Unless the carbon was very old it could leech impurities back into the system. But if it was new carbon it would only help the situatuion.

also HITH is caused by stress, we had an oscar suffer of it because of STRESS.....
