I have carbon in the cabinet for emergencies. I never use it regularly. I fill the space with ceramic rings or something.
same. I haven't run full time chemical media since I got back into aquariums about 5 years ago. I used to use the Penguin cartridges w/ carbon when I was a kid, but now, I take the ones that come with the filter, strip them down to the plastic frame and use it as a barrier to hold a custom media setup.

Can You guys list what you have in your filters,

as media.

quick list.

want to know how many different setups are options

Sumps:

Water changes and biological media are all you need - if your tank is dirty after that it's more a reflection of a bad owner, rather than a problem with the waters and fish :)
:iagree:

thanks for all of the replies. As long as my parameters are okay I will continue using only bio. Awesome!

I have a 210 with an FX5 and I keep large South and Central American fishes. I have found that by using only the foam inserts for mechanical and filling all trays with ceramic rings for biological filtration in conjunction with weekly water changes of about 40% and bi-monthly filter cleanings using tank water to preserve beneficial bacteria, the ammonia and nitrites stay at very close to 0ppm and nitrate levels hover around 10ppm.
