Guys that have this problem, how long have you had your tanks setup? This can also happen in new aquariums. If not new, then it is either silicates or lacking light levels.

the tanks i have the promble in are about 4-5 months old

Possible long cycle, but more likely the same problem... lack of light/intensity, or excess silicates.

well, you could get some plecos.the only algae that my plecos dont eat is hair algae, and that sh*t sucks ballsac
There are far more alga that plecos don't eat, then they do eat. green and brown alga are the two types that they will eat, if even this. Beard, brush, thread, slime, hair, fuzz, and staghorn are not touched by plecos.

I was told that the rust colored algae is not algae at all. I was told that this is common in fairly new tanks and that they are organisms called diatoms. I got this information on the Oscarfish.com forum. I believe the person who wrote of this can be found under the name of Kmuda. My 125gt has only been set up since the middle of January. Supposedly it will eventually go away with excellent water conditions and time. Light is not supposed to be an influence on it, but to be on the safe side, I only leave my lights on for 5 hours a day. I have no green algae. That supposedly comes at a later time.

Welcome to MFK. Brown algae is a diatom. It generally will go away after the tank has been established long enough, however with lacking amounts of light, or excess silicates will cause a return.

I usually see this a bit until the tank is completely balanced(up and running for a couple months). Have some now in the 125 that has been running for 3 weeks.

Siamese algae eaters love this stuff though they tend to get eaten by the big fishes :) Plecos could care less.
