I meant they should be painted/coated black, by bare I meant that they arent bare metal but rather coated...

Well, they would of already caused problems by now right? So Im thinking that whatever things that leeched into the water was previously removed from water changes. I dont know if Galvanised nails/screws would harm fish, but test your water for iron traces. And or magnesium if possible.

yeah it's screws with no coating..whatsoever.

do they sell test kits for iron?

You can test for anything... I wouldn't worry about a little rust.
