I got this fish as a rusty cichlid but I thought they were suppose to have a sort of purple color?
purple is more in the body, they get a rusty color in the head. How big is the fish and is it the dominate fish in the tank?
I have seen different strains/collection points/variations within species. Not all male rusties get the dark purple down their side.
Alternatively, it could be a female. They are less likely to get the purple.

I've seen rusties in all different colors, from all brown like yours, to one that I have that in certain lights looks like a female cobalt zebra (dark blue). The only thing that looks off to me in your photos is that the fins look black like a Varient of L. Caeruleus. Possible Lab/Rusty hybrid maybe???
It could be a hybrid if it is full grown and the dominate fish. It should have taken on its full color. Does it always look like this?
