I have a group of 5 Eupterus and I have a few questions. Can anybody that has kept them give input on max size? From what I'm reading the max size in tanks is 8 in and the max size is 11 or 12 in in the wild. Can they surpass 8 in in a tank? Because I have one that is either at that mark or close to it and it doesn't seem like its going to stop. Also, do I need to regulate how much their eating? I have one that has a gut that is bigger then the fish is long. If so, how can I do that? They are being kept in my 125 cichlid tank, and just scavenge whatever is left over.

Mine is 8 years old and is maybe that long with tail included. He slowed down after getting to adult size. You may have a beast mode mutant. I gave a black skirt that is 3+ inches and 4 times the mass of the others

Thanks, this thing is huge compared to my others and I have had all of them for 6 months to a year. What was the growth rate on your Eupterus?

Your max size info sounds correct. If the ID is correct, your biggest will stop, no matter what it seems like right now.

They can and do surpass 8" in captivity, 8" is sort of average.

I don't regulate how much mine 4 have been eating. One too looks like it has a huge tummy. If worried, you can give them shelled peas or epsom salt baths to see if it is a bloat.

Starting from 3", about 6" in 1-1.5 years, and much slower from there usually.

Ok cool. I dont think it is bloat. If they do surpass eight then I think I am good. Was just wondering if I had the wrong ID or something. Thanks.

No one can confirm their ID but you right now. Post some good photos if you wish. IDK your experience level with Synodontis but eupterus is rather hard to confuse with most others.

What a big beautiful synodontis eupterus.

This is my first syno species, but they are Eupterus. I think I just got ones that like to eat. Here are some crappy pictures off my phone, cichlids kept getting in the way.
