So I answered an ad for a Jurupari tonight, expecting/hoping to get a leucosticta, since they're always labeled as that. As it turns out it was the real thing (and big!). I brought it home anyway. Here's a side by side comparison of the two oft-confused species. Not really all that similar when you see them so close together.

We checked the vents and it's tough to tell but we think it's a female. She's big... about 7" TL. Not sure what I'll do... might offer her for trade for a female leucosticta just in the interest of keeping the tank to two different sets of geos.

I think that is Satanoperca sp. "red lip"

Really don't see those very often either. I would keep her and find a mate for your Leucosticta, granted you have the space to keep them.

I have space, but the more fish I keep grabbing the less space there is for the Orangeheads. I was thinking I could do as many as 12 eartheaters overall but now with 8 in there I'm not really sure. We're keeping her though. Girlfriend already named her Agnes. (No clue where that one came from.)

Eventually there'll be a bigger tank for them, but that's a ways off.

The Leucosticta spend half their time up in the mid levels of the tank though. We'll see. As the juvy redheads grow I'll add 2 at a time til it looks too crowded.
