the convict will kill them if you get him a partner, i have heard the worst stories and witnessed convicts destroying everything so i recmend to watch yourself

hmmm im getting mixed answers. if it helps right now the con is in a divided 20gH. on the other side is a yellow lab that was getting beat up in my 90. the lab can fit through the holes in the divider and when the con and the lab are together the con chases the lab around and i have heard the lab hit some stuff hard and it hist the glass even harder. so do they chase because the tank is so small? or is the con just mean. it is a female by the way. as for water parems. all my tanks have the same water with no additives to change anything. so the water chemistry is definately not an issue. so im still un decided as to if i should try it. if they can both hndle the fighting then i might do it. im looking into some kind of puffer for my 20.

p.s. the con is maybe an inch smaller than my largest fish in the 90.

A friend of mine has a 65 with 1 Venustus and a uncountable # of Kenyi's.
He added half a dozen mixed sex convicts last year.
The cons are doing fine, and the africans are also doing fine.
The con's have spawned a couple of times, but they don't bother the other fish.(other than chasing them away from "their" cave.)

you can keep tank bred fish together as the long since requirements of wild specimens have been lost in adaption to captivity. hence why species can be introduced to non-native habitats the offspring are now more suited to live in aquariums which no matter how we try will always be more controled then wild bio-types.
That said i've mixed new world with old world plenty of times. the convicts should be ok with the africans in that size tank. It's when you start dealing with managuense, red devils & the larger americans that aggression & size play a part. Ever see a neolamprlogus tetracanthus fight a grammode? some africans can hold their own. no peacocks though they are to placid.

I have these guys in with my mainly African cichlid tank. They seem to fit in just fine. I did get rid of the five large silver dollars. they just looked so wrong in there.
