SA/CA biotype-ish ideas? Suggestions?

cichlids and plants don't mix well. You can have a natural looking aquarium without plants. Plants are a pain in the ass anyways + they throw away a lot of electricity on lighting. It might not be for you but electricity is a issue with me because of so many tanks so you can bet I'd rather be running a extra filter rather than a light that grows plants.

This is a blanket statement. Not all cichlids are like that.

no but it's an experiment (for the most part) on discovering which ones will work well with your plants. && for the record, what's with the green font? Is that you're signature font LOL? Is there a way to set it so your font can be a color by default? There's a guy who always posts in black which is just retarded because you can never read it.

I'm fortunate the green can easily be read across three different backgrounds and I just like it, nothing special.;)

Well I already have a number of plants established without spending an extra cent on anything other than a new substrate which I wanted anyway I just happened to gear it towards plants while I was at it.
And from my experience essentially you could run just plants as your filter. It would take a lot of plants but the theory is there. Since that's what nature does. Anyways
I also though the biggest issue with cichlids+plants is the tendency of cichlids to burrow which would then uproot the plants causing them to die.
Also the size of cichlids cause the plants to be disrupted just by the fish swimming around. But since I would like to focus on smaller fish this issue would be avoided.
All in all I'm pretty convinced I'll be able to make it work if anything at least I'm willing to spend the time and money to TRY to make it happen and if my cichlids do end up killing my plants at least I'll still have my main objective which is a tank full of fish :)

Unfortunately, all are from Asia.

FYI ... there are a few african barb species.

As for stock, in a 46 gallon I'd skip the festivums and sevs... and depending on height the angels. If you want plants, might be better off basing off the keyholes ... ie a pair keyholes and trio nannacara anomala along with either glowlight tetras, head and tail lights, or four eye phantoms would give you a nice Essequibo River, Guyana tank ... there are lots of dwarf combos that would fit in that small a tank and planted to boot. A pair of bolivian rams and Laetacara dorsigera with a school of black neon tetras, greenfire or black phantoms would make a good Bolivian tank.

Those are two 'biotype' style options, though I just go with what plants I grow so they don't always match up to the fish.

Thanks a bunch for the ideas. Looks like there's a bunch of combinations I have to run through.
