SA/CA community cichlid tank recommendations for a 600

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
way way way too many fish unless your gonna put like 3/4 of them in other tanks. would work with everyone for a little bit but as those guys het bigger your gonna have to change like 1000 gallons a week. heres what id do

More aggressive community: trimac, freidrichsthalli, xiloaensis, chancho, carpintis, loisellei, zonatus and i if it were me id try to do all these with pairs to keep them occupied with eachother with lots of caves for spawning.

Less aggressive community: red isletas, sinispilum, lyonsi, godmani. buccorti, carpintis, pearsi, fenestratus, hartwegi, bifasciatus, maculacauda, zonatus, argentea, regani, all thhese youd probably be okay with single males
either way its a ton of fish the second option i think youd be less likely for murders. good luck

heres what i would do with this tank.
1. umbee pair/ dovii pair solo
2. la ceiba freddy pair, lyonsi pair, zonatus pair, hogaboomorum pair, motaguense pair, and istlanum pair. best of luck getting everything setup and keep us updated

Fish man thanks for your input, I've read and enjoyed your threads especially the umbee updates.

I really didn't want any females as not interested in breeding and wanted to minimize aggression during spawning. My end goal is a 12-14 all male community, that's why I wanted to start out with 20 or so medium males, let them sort out the pecking order and weed that list down to my desired number.

I do plan on changing 150 gallons 3 times a week, I have my setup staged to do that easily.

Out of the fish I'm putting in, which do you see as the most problematic?

pretty much only the amphilophus and the parachromis. everyone else seem to to do pretty good in community setups espescially the veija and the pearsi/ buccorti. the problem i see with all males is that theres gonna be fish that want to be dominate and with no female to occupy there interest you could have issues when it comes to breeding time, but if you weed out the problem fish then your probably gonna be fine its just gonna be a lot of adjusting

lol thats almost half of the list

Do you want to go aggressive or semi-aggresive. Your list seems mixed which could create chaos.

leaning towards aggressive, i tried to do as much research as possible and talked to many people, alot who have had big tanks and aggressive cichlids, i thought i was going down the right path but .... yeah

i was more referring to the ones that are mpre likely to cause problems. youll have some that will be aggressive and some that arent just the parachromis and amphilophus genis are more likely to have troublemakers.

which i assume are these?

trimac, freidrichsthalli, xiloaensis, chancho, carpintis, loisellei, zonatus
