SA/CA community cichlid tank recommendations for a 600

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
severums have alot of variety, chocolates, uarus i hear are mellow but large.i would also use a large growing schooler for movement. if you stay with CA i would try synspiliums, fenes, bifa, black belts.some freddies.so many ways to go! wish i had your "problem" haha

what would you put that would make an exciting, colorful display where everyone won't be trying to murder each other lol

If you don't want any major aggression, I'd stick with a mix of mellow SA cichlids (severums, chocolates, uaru, earth eaters, smaller stuff) and do a biotope with other compatible SA species... A few fancy plecos, corydoras catfish, larger tetras, maybe some angelfish (yes, I know they are SA cichlids), maybe a black ghost knife (would have to be careful with bite sized fish when it got big).

Personally, I'd do a big CA tank with aggressive cichlids, but I don't mind aggression. I can definitely see why someone would as it can be a pain to deal with.

What are your tap water perameters? Hard or soft water to one extreme or another?

I would say no to the oscars.. just a personal preference, and everyone has them.

I have a Jag, and a Midas together in the same tank, and the trouble maker is actually a 3" male convict! It can work out in some cases. The midas/jags are way more hyped up than they need to be.

For me, I would do a mix of large cichlids... probably SA/CA mix because these are my fish of choice.

I think that some Capintis would look really nice. They are colorful, and aren't as aggressive as the other large cichlids. I find these with parrot fish really give some good color contrast. I have this mix, as well as a honduran jag thrown in the mix and it makes for an interesting look at.

Frontosa would also be good if you wanted some color, but they don't have much personality, and are rather just something to look at and not interact with.

I think however that doing the typical pbass, bichir, tig routine would get old after awhile.

But in the end, it's really up to you, and the fish that you really want to have.

So we are suggesting everything from uaru to fronts but have no clue what the OP's hardness/pH etc are? Am I the only one who thinks this is an important thing to ask before recommending a stocklist?

PH can be altered. It's not recommended, but its possible.

I USED to raise the PH for my Frontosa, and Calvus as my water is only 7.2 out of tap, but they are thriving in the taps PH. I wouldn't mess with making it lower though.
