SA Lungfish in Big Tank with Big Fish? Is it Possible?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes - you should be fine. Watch out for OTHER FISH picking on its skin and legs.

I've actually pondered similar. I would try it if I had a way to seperate the lung if it didn't work and I would be cautious. I've heard of large SA lungfish that are fine in communitys and some that take bites out of fish. No experiance with it myself though.

Actually....

Please notice that the lungfish is actively hunting. It's only a matter of time before he snags one. (Notice the fish are giving him a wide berth)

Cichlids are the ones most likely to pick at a SAL's skin/legs. True, they will "live" without legs, but how would you like to constantly have your fingers bitten off everyday?

Not to get off topic but do the legs grow back once bitten off?

They do grow back, but get eaten again. Very stressful for the lungfish.

hey jed,

if you are proposing it go into your BIG tank with all those other fishes, i would advise against it...the stress of constantly nipped up pelvic/pectoral fins and possibly other parts of the fish can lead to infection quite easily...especially with lungfishes. other than nipping back (which you don't want a lungfish to do to some of your prized specimens), they are defenseless against aggressive fishes.
if it's not the big tank, which tankmates are you considering throwing him in with? --

Jed, I concur with Solomon. I don't think a big SAL would get enough to eat in your 250 gallon, especially with all those big Cichla.

My 2-foot SAL stays in my "wimpy" 180 gallon for that reason. I fear that it would get its ass handed to it by the dorados, brycons, and possibly the apurensis in my 360. :(
