i got mine for $35 each from wes at rare fish. they are great fish but they just sit around until food comes. hopefully they will be more active when they get bigger. growth seems slow right now and they are only 3 inches long

are you guys talking about vampire tetras, if you are I have a great pic of a wild caught one, the guy in the pic is NOT me by the way, looks like about 4 feet long, and look at those teeth, WOW

i heard they die at around 12 inches for unknown reasons

Only because people don't upgrade the needs of the fish as the fish grows. As it grows, it will need more swimming space and VERY high levels of oxygen. Not to mention, as it grows, people probably feed it more and the water quality is less than ideal, which these fish need.
