My first bichir i ever saw was a small senegal in my local lfs. I had to buy him. He was a funny guy. Contrary to my other bichirs...he was was super active and always swimming through the tank. He had alot of personality and he was a funny guy. I had him several years. Then from one day to the other he was away. I searched in the tank but could never find him. I thought my ornate ate him. Now several months later i want build up my new bichir tank. I had to remove a board and there he was. It was sad to find him but i´m also glad to know what happened. I have no clue how he managed to get out since i closed all holes in the tank. Rest in peace my little friend.

Sorry for your loss, just last year a p.senegal came home with me and started off my bichir insanity. It's really unfortunate when this happens, especially with a creature you're so connected to.

This brings up many conversations I've had with other fish keepers about fish diets and water quality and so on. Using gold fish as feeders, or feeding mice or chicken vs. only feeding pellets because it's better for the fish. Using water conditioners during water changes vs. just straight tap water. All this concern for the fishes health and sadly it's so common to just forget to shut the lid of the tank and lose a perfectly healthy fish.
How do most fish die in the aquarium?
For me it's:
1) Heater malfunction
2) Power outages
3) over feeding or not noticing a dead fish rotting.
4) jumping out

1000) Heart attack or clogged arteries from feeding to many goldfish or mice.

Sorry for your loss.. it was a beauty... i remember even to this day when i lost my first bichir... they are just such cuties.. the way they chew like a dog...
 
sorry man, I hope you find another like him. But now you know what you have to do so it dosent happen agen.
