Sad story about Walmart and Clown knives

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There would be no more stupid "I rescued a fish from Wal-Mart" or "Shocked at Sick Fish at Wal-Mart" posts... if no one on MFK entered a Wal-Mart store.

If you go into a Wal-Mart - even to just look at the fish - you'll buy something....which is their plan.

Buying from Wal-Mart = supporting Wal-Mart's business model (which includes treating livestock/fish as merchandise and employees as expenses to be minimized/cheated whenever possible).

Don't buy ANYTHING from Wal-Mart: not fish, not food, not socks, not pickles, NOTHING.

Support your LFS, buy online, or go somewhere else. Just don't shop at Wal-Mart!

every time I buy fish at walmart, meijer, and other terrible stores I bag them up myself and right down the code for the $.12 comets, then go through the self checkout. Its much easier paying $2 and rescuing a tank full of fish.

I've even gone as far as letting the employees bag them up and changing the codes they write on them. Am I stealing? Yes. Do I care? No. They shouldn't be selling fish. If they lose their asses on them then maybe they will stop selling them or they'll pay more attention to the fish section.

I'll never buy fish from walmart.

I don't even like to buy from petsmart, except they have healthier looking, younger fish than my LFS

Had an employee at meijer ask me what code to use. I was honest with him, but probably could have gotten a deal.

Bought snails from meijer once. Employee actually wanted to put them into a dry box instead of a fish bag :( He didn't work regularly at the pet depatment, but if the snails are in an aquarium, doesn't it make sense that they should be transported in water.

Even at $.12 each, Wal-Mart's not losing anything on the fish. That's why they don't care if they die either. It's a tax write off (spoilage).

The fish are in the store as a loss leader. They draw people in...who might buy some fish...but will most probably buy other stuff. Is this what happens to you?

The only way to impact Wal-Mart is to stop buying ANYTHING there...or even setting foot in the stores....and to convince your friends and neighbors to do the same.

I have to say your wrong on the how they lure me in part. I've never once been to walmart to buy fish. I'll go there to buy food and maybe something when other stores are closed but I usually only go look at the fish if I have time to kill. Theres no way they're making money on the fish that they're selling for $.12 aside from maybe the comets, shrimp, and rosys.

The only thing I can think of to get them to close down their fish is to contact their suppliers and ask them not to sell to them until they clean up their tanks and learn what their doing. The other thing you could do is write congress.

I'm sure that their suppliers would be more than happy to give up their biggest customers. And Congress has bigger fish to fry with Wal-Mart (pun intended): discrimination against women, illegal anti-union activities, labor law violation (overtime, military reservists), driving jobs out of the US, shoddy health coverage, etc.

The way to make Wal-Mart stop selling fish or otherwise change is to demonstrate that it is in their best business interest to change.

One way to demonstrate that commitment would be to send them a list of hundreds of MFK members who have committed to not buy ANYTHING from ANY Wal-Mart until they quit stocking live fish. That would open their eyes.

Or people can just continue to b*tch about how bad Wal-Mart fish departments are and continue to "rescue" (i.e. give $$$ to Wal-Mart for) half-dead fish.

Message me and I will not only call the head manager at the store, but I will contact the headquarters as well. My fiance drove truck for Walmart for many years, so I have a lady there that knows me well and will listen to me if I complain.

Wal-Mart supports poverty by paying there staff as little a possible and charging as much as they can still sell stuff to make you think that you are saving money. We have 3 grocery stores in Wainwright and Wal-Mart is the most expensive for lots of things even with my wife 10% discount.

I have to wonder how many of those fish ARRIVE in good condition. The Walmart in Punta Gorda actually says that Puffers, Blackfin Sharks will need soft brackish and Pacus will get big, they just dont say HOW big. The reason walmart sucks is that employees have no knowldge of fish, its a department store that randomly sells fish. Luckily 2 part time employees WHO GIVE A CRAP work at my lfs now...
