I bought a juvenile saddled bichir, abt 3 inches long, I added to a tank with 3 cichlids and a rainbow shark. They don't bother the bichir. I was advised to use stress heal so it would ease the fish of its initial stress. It's been 5 days since I've had the bichir. It's just moving along the floor. Is that normal behavior? I bought the fish only after a but load of research. I know they are lazy fish, but it hasn't been very active for the past 5 days.

It’s normal, that’s how most lower jaw bichirs are. They’re lazy bottom dwellers.

Thank you. Was starting to get worked up. Are the upper jaw bichirs more active?

Welcome aboard

I would not call Endlicheri lazy but inactive most of the time. The Delhezi and Senegal Polypterus are two of the Upper Jaw species. The Senegal is the most acrive of the two. I personally would not add a Captive Bred Senegal because the smaller Senegal could be eaten.

How bout i get a Senegal bout the same size, say 3" that would work wouldn't it, the smaller one wouldn't fit in its mouth. My endlicheri is abt 3".

The only concern I have is when the Endlicheri out grows the Senegal it then may become a meal. i personally keep both species but in separate aquariums. Years ago added two Senegal wirh a Endlicheri, Ornates, and a Delhezi and the Senegal were eaten by the Endli.

That's actually good reasoning. So the endlicheri grows rather quickly ? is that what you're saying?

Both grow in spurts but Endli grows a bit faster will be 3 times bulkier and than the much slender Senegal could possibly be eaten.
