In my area there has been heavy construction, various streets (including mine) have been closed and every day last week the water has been shut off from 10am to 5pm. The water shut down was only suppose to last 3 days but because of crappy weather it extended to all five days. It looks like they are going to have to start doing the same beginning tomorrow.

Here's my issue - Monday to Friday evening whenever I turned on the water there was a very visible brownness to the water so I didn't want to do any water changes. Normally I do 2-3 WC's a week, not because I have high nitrates but because it's easy and I can do it as I work on my PC. I have been running the dishwasher and plan on doing 5 loads of laundry today and hoping that will clean out any brown residue.

Question is, after all the laundry and such should I do a water change and use extra prime or play it safe and wait for them to be done with turning off and on the water? I just don't know when they plan on being done is the thing.

It's probably fine. You get all kinds of debris coming through the line when we redo water mains. It shouldn't be anything harmful to you or the fish, it's just sediment that settled in the bottom of the line and you drink it every day anyway. Just run the water till it comes out clear and you're good to go. I'll say however, that the brown crud most likely contains high levels of copper and you should be careful with inverts.

I would not chance it but that is me, because if something does go wrong, you can't do the emergency water change.

test your tanks & see if there's even any undesirable levels. might be fine.
