with any substrate you run the risk of impaction (http://www.herpcenter.com/general/1791-sand-impaction.html). most turtle keepers use nothing because of that risk and turtles poop a TON, making it hard to clean the tank and substrate.

if you must have something on the bottom of the tank, i would recommend a painted bottom (paint the outside of course) or large stones (too large to be swallowed).

*full disclosure; i never used sand with my turtles as i try to learn from the mistakes of others.

thanks for the input guys!!..i was just wondering if 100% silica sand is okay?...versus the normal 50lbs bag of "round" sand from the lfs for $50..if anyone knows or has experience please let me know..

my concern is the silica...as i've heard/read from previous post that silica sand..is the sand used in cigarette ashtrays in public places...would really appreciate any help from someone with experience..THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

other than the risk of impaction, it's fine. it's sand, like on the beach, and most likely has salt in it. so if you use it, give it a good rinse in warm water.

thanks for the info on impaction scatman...but that was all about leopard geckos and bearded dragons...i'm trying to find out if the silica will irritate the softshell turtle

although that thread was specifically about leos and beardeds, the principal applies to all reptiles. i think i should mention that not every animal kept on sand was impacted. it's just a possibility, and in my opinion, an unnecessary risk no matter the odds.

what do you mean by irritate, like scratch its skin? if so, i highly doubt it will bother your turtle, but i never tried myself.
