I have been doing water changes strait from the tap as long as I have had aquariums. recently I have started thinking about the effects the chlorine and or chloramine In my tap water may be having on my fish. I was wondering how much of a danger there really is. Also what do you guys do to your water when doing water changes?

If there was a problem with chlorine or chloramine in your tap, you would know almost immediately by the way your fish were acting. That being said, I know my tap water is almost perfect but I still use seachem's safe or
Prime whenever I do a waterchange just in case. I'd rather be safe then sorry. Most municipal water supplies are run by humans, hence there is always the chance for human error. I would hate for my fish to suffer or die because of someone else's mistake.

Do not take me wrong, but from what i see at MFK you guys have a lot of issues with your tap water, or water companies.....

In Portugal it is straight from the garden hose, come rain or sunshine. Never had a problem, never had a WC schock in tens of years...

I've done my water changes straight from the tap for as long as I have kept fish (15+ years) and I use Prime right before I add the water.

I use prime in all my tanks now for every water change. I used to never used any of these products and never had a problem. I moved within NJ two years ago. I set up my tanks using prime and then the following week did a water change and almost lost all of my fish due to high amounts of chlorine. Since then I have always used prime to be safe.

Chlorine and chloramine are oxidizers. So if you have high organics in your aquarium water and do a smaller water change then they will oxidize the organics and not harm your fish. If you do a larger water change or don't have much organics in your aquarium water then it will hurt your fish. Best to use a dechlorinator like prime to be safe.

I've always used water straight from the faucet along with a dechlorinator. I never had chloramine in the water (some areas have it some don't), nor did I have more than trace ammonia, etc. I'd get the local water department's report on the water in your area if you have a concern.

Also, some people are stung when the water department begins changing the chemicals, so that is worth thinking about.
