Sailfin Molly sick

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't lose hope yet, Grace. Some fish tend to perk up once the conditions are corrected but make the necessary adjustments slowly and gradually. Most fish don't take lightly to the sudden change of environment. Hope she will make it. It is not pleasant to lose a fish that you really are attached to.

TP, I don't pretend to be an expert on anything.lol I just help wherever help is needed. Thanks for the compliment I think.:D

I am sorry to say she didn't make it through the night. The male is still the same. I am surprised to see the other male and female are hanging around him. Almost seems as if they are encouraging him. I have never had any fish that act the way these sailfins do. They are very bonded.

mollies always seemed quite bonded when i had them as pets instead of breeders.

the sailfins are a bit more brackish than the normal mollies they also are capable of full marine (slow transition) being that they are found in freshwater, brackish, and coastal salt they are very versatile fish.

in full marine environments they can get to just shy of 6" which is quite abit larger than the regular mollies.

I found that my sailfins did best in a brackish environment at 78-80 degrees. with a 4 females to one male ratio. this prevented over harrasment of the females and fighting between the males over the females (though specific felmas still seemed more prized and fought over)

take lupin's suggestiong and your others should be fine.

My options I guess at this point are:

1. Wait and see how they do. I added crushed coral to the tank and am watching their parameters carefully. The one male isn't doing too well, but not horrible either. The other male/2 female seem to be okay.

2. Remove the clown pleco and catfish (and live plant) and add some sea salt every couple of days until their salinity is 1.005, and see if that helps at all.

Unless, of course, someone else has a better idea. I did add shimmy blocks (2)

I have heard that putting in "wonder shells" helps too for mollies, but I have never used them so would like advice on those before using them.
