Hi All,

I've spotted some of the above at one of the better dealers in the uk (Jelly will know exactly who I am talking about) and at first glance, I was very interested. However, I appreciate they can get big and are also very fast swimmers, requiring a decent amount of space.

So, with the above in mind, I am interested to know what size tanks people are keeping theirs in and also what the projected growth rate is? also, I'm looking for some opinions on whether or not my current system (~340g, foot print is 84"x36") is suitable for 2-3 years, maybe slightly longer?

It's a SA alternative to the ATF and a fish I've always wanted to keep so I'm keepnig my fingers crossed for some good news!

Funny, I was going to PM you. I went there on the weekend and couldn't resist it. Tiny 2" babies. I grabed one, they are cheap as well. I have had two before that died when my tank broke. I would say they are right up there near the top of my list as one of my favourite fish. There is a machine like charactor to them, very purposeful. They are very entertaining when small as well, punch well above there weight. There are lots of examples being kept in our size tanks. I won't be power feeding him though.

They also had some nice tigers there, V's and a Goliath. Did you visit, did you see the nice larger gold wolf in the quarenteen area.

Larger Gold wolf, you say? how big roughly?

My only problem at the moment is I'm lacking tank space. Ideally, I need to move the Golds to the main tank but one is still to small and moving one always ends in tears-the larger one of my babies really isn't the brightest wolf I've come accross and seemed to just sit there when the black is on the prowl leading to missing scales and so forth. I've still got my Ornatum and they desperately need to be upgraded too...

But dorado... hmm. If they were 3-5" then that'd be no problem and they could go into blender (wolf grow out) and probably be fine. I couldn't put the Ornatum in there though as they're too dopey.

How quick did your VATF take to get to 12"?

I'd say go with a atf :woot: You might regret getting a Dorado in the long run, they get real aggressive when larger & don't know when to quit fighting. I'm 80% sure he/she will terrorize all tankmates. I'm sure you can get a atf to 12"+ in a year or under, if i can, u can.

My atf is only in a 8x2x2  Your main tank would be Purrrrrrfect.

The gold was probably 4" i reckon.

It took a good year or so to get it to 12"+ from 4". They are only a couple of inches at the moment. I found better growth when they were in a bigger tank with plenty of room to get around. I would go for the brevis if they have still got it just to have something different.

Don't wan't to steer you away from getting what you originally wan't just showing you their downside through my experience. I've tried 4 times with them in random communities & 3 times with atf all of them being unsuccessful. In my experience dorados are aggressive towards all tankmates, where atf are only aggressive towards other fish that resemble their kind like aros.

Dorado was one of my favorite fish to keep as well but in my experience they grow very fast and become highly aggressive. My last one grew from 4" to 14" in a matter of 4 months and started attacking a 33" niger cat. I hope to own another at some point but only when I upgrade my tank size (currently 750g). I have a small vatf now and enjoy him as well. His growth seems to be slower and he does well with tankmates at this point.

geez i keep discovering cool fish from the forums of MFK! Awesome fish!

Just a tidler Gold then. It's probably from the original batch I got my third from. I keep debating getting more golds as a swarm would be fun.

I like the idea of an ATF (BATF/VATF for obvious reasons) but they're the wrong continent! Plus, there is no way anything sub 10" could go in the main tank, meaning the ATF would have to grow out in something else fairly big, which I don't have. Mind you, I guess I'm going to have that problem regardless.

Does anyone think that a 120g (48x24x24) would stunt an ATF to 12"? I have a 4ft gap that I can squeeze another tank into but that's the only way I can do it.

I grew my biggest fatf to 8"-9" in a standard 60g, not to mention my current 14" vatf is in a 24" wide tank if thats good enough reference for you. I'm sure it could get to 12" np in that 120g & it will not stunt.
