To be honest, I'm still very tempted by the Dorado but can't really ignore the horror stories. As cool as the ATF are, they're the wrong continent and I'm a stickler for that kind of thing. However, I've seen a video of a Dorado with a big Cichla Tem. and the Dorado bumps it and gives it grief. No biting but still... It reminds me a bit of the Brycon behaviour I've seen.

Brycon Semtex, eh? I hear they have something of an... explosive... personallity.

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week. :D

Spell checker on the Iphone. I think thats a great name for the next described species though.

I have had a couple of Dorado and they are quite simalar to Brycon in behavour. I think a shoal of Golds would be the way to go, I don't know of anybody else that has done it.

Some people get lucky, all my dorados hated my cichla wouldn't even let them surface for food.

Hi All,

I've spotted some of the above at one of the better dealers in the uk (Jelly will know exactly who I am talking about) and at first glance, I was very interested. However, I appreciate they can get big and are also very fast swimmers, requiring a decent amount of space.

So, with the above in mind, I am interested to know what size tanks people are keeping theirs in and also what the projected growth rate is? also, I'm looking for some opinions on whether or not my current system (~340g, foot print is 84"x36") is suitable for 2-3 years, maybe slightly longer?

It's a SA alternative to the ATF and a fish I've always wanted to keep so I'm keepnig my fingers crossed for some good news!

They're pretty much the same fish as S. Maxillosus IMO... Speed, and a lot of character.
However, unlike ATFs, they do know when to turn around. In fact, I've never seen them crash into tank sides unless they were only just introduced to the tank and they did that nose rubbing thing.

Your tank will be fine for a long time.
IMO these fish are so much more fun than ATF.

Also, they aren't necessarily terrors as tankmates, myself as well as many others have kept them with other fish long term.
