Hopefully your students really appreciate this project! I wish one of my teachers would have done this.

Cool project I saw your post on mittenstate a while back but I'm wondering.. The DNR advised you to release tank raised fish..?

Yes, I had to get a permit to release the fish though. I have to send info to them about the release, number, size, location, etc...

My students are very excited about this. They cannot wait for the eggs to hatch and to start feeding them.

that's awesome. I've always just heard not to release tank raised fish so I was confused on why the DNR was encouraging it. Where do you plan on releasing them or have they told you where to do it?

The DNR does not want you to release fish that have been kept in a community with exotic/foreign species. If the class were to add a imported KOI to the tank, it may bring something with it and infect the salmon for example.

Then you'll have a salmon fishery right where you release them...are you going to release them in a freshwater creek/stream/river?

What species of Salmon are they...Atlantic/coho/Chinook/kokanee/chum/sockeye?

Those bags of food look like purina salmon chow, really is such a thing...

This is great because Salmon is a terminal fishery...meaning when they spawn it is at the end of their life cycle...they can go out to the ocean and when the mature they can return 1000's of miles right back to the place that you release them...

Another interesting fact...the Salmon that were native to the rivers and streams around Mt St Helens, when their natural habitat was destroyed by the volcano, they were found in streams nearest to their home spawn beds, but not necessarily the closest by actual miles traveled, but as the crow flys...All this from an animal with the brain the size of those eggs you're hatching and less than 5 years old...

I was involved with the local high school fisheries class in Westport Wash. And the kids just loved the fact they got to see results from the spawn they released...

Great Job for exposing them...it can only bring light to how delicate our environment really is...KUDOs, we need more teachers like you...

I love teachers that do this, i remember in middle school one of our teachers did this(it wasn't mine) and i visited the class room just so i could look at them. I's educational and adds to the fish stocks.

Interesting, big powerhead is going to be needed
