JDs can breed with most, if not all central am cichlids (given they are a male female pair). im trying to breed my male midas with my female dempsey.

That sounds like what I'm doing. I bred some TexasXCons and want to cross one of them with my Salvini. The TexasXCons are only about 1.5". So I have some waiting to do.
