Hello all

I have no Discus experience at all but i am babysitting my brother-in-law's Discus (20 of them).
They are in 200g with my 2 baby BBXB

here is my question. they seem to have some ick or something its not so much on the body more in the fins . Can i treat them with salt and higher temp. are they sensitive to salt or should i use a NO-ICK medecine ?

Thank you for your time

Discus are not sensitive to salt nor to ich medication. How you choose to treat them is up to you.

listen to him if you want to whipe out 20 discus over night

go with salt+high temps. discus are sensitive to copper which is found in alot of ick meds so i would advice against that.

Most ich medications contain formalin and malachite green, not copper. Most fish are sensitve to copper if not administered in the proper dose.

Yeah quick cure is formalin and malachite green. Two strong carcinogens so try not to spill it on yourself. Discus love high temps (80's) so I would check the temperature in the tank. Ich can't survive temps above around 84-85 degrees and if the tank is already at that temp then you may not be dealing with ich. If it's lower than that, then I recommend you bump up the temp whether you add salt or chemicals. It definitely won't hurt the discus.

maybe where u are but i find copper in some of the meds around here so to advice to use any meds without warning that discus are sensitive to some ingredient can cause a plague.

didnt mean to come off as rude but to advice meds without warning is very dangerous.

im sure we can all agree that salt+90 temp will cure ick with no problems or need or meds

Discus can easily take temps of 90 degrees and salt 1 teaspoon per gallon. Ick in the free swimming stage can not survive at that temperature. Leave it that way for 2 weeks and ich if it is that will definately be gone. Just remember to add a few airstones as at those temperatures there will be less O2 in the tank. Ich meds are not needed at those temperature. Keep us posted. By the way how big are the fish?

Hope your fish get better man. I treated my discus when they had ich with quick cure. I was a 3 day treatment at 82dgrs and the lights were out the whole time. I did lose a couple though but they were only about 5 months at the time.........
