Salt for Gars?

I was talking to a long time aquar-ist the other day who said I should put some aquarium salts in my tank to help build my fishes slime coats up...I know gar live in brackish waters sometimes
and Im just wondering what you guys think of this? And what ratios are recommended? thanks.

I only add it when Im treating some sort of problem. other than that it only exists in minor amounts(water softner)

I added a small amount of salt to my gars' water when I had some in aquariums. There's no need to keep them under brackish or saltwater conditions, though, and doing so will only make keeping the water quality up all the harder.
