We have top name salt mixes like Seachem, Red Sea, Aqua Medic etc etc,,

and no name's (names i havn't seen anyway) like Seequasal, CoralReef, etc.

No name ones i have found to be EXTREMELY cheap (65$ for 24kg CoralReef opposed to 85$ for 25kg Red Sea) compared to the name brand. All state 100% phosphate and nitrate free and high in calcium plus 70 trace elements etc etc!!!

What is the con for buying the cheaper brands??
Is it possible half this stuff (like foods at the grocers) is made in the same factory and put in different packaging??

InstantOcean is what i use. Can get them in the big jugs.

Expensive over here. Prob the same price as any other "big" name brand here.

I would ask at the shop you are buying it at, most employees at my LFS seem to have had a SW tank or know someone in the store who does that can give a recomendation. Assuming they aren't just trying to turn a profit, most give pretty honest opinions. I used instant ocean and recently switched to coralife as it was a better deal at the moment. Also read the packages, some offer different advantages like ph buffers and such allready in them.

I would go with a name brand yeah you may pay more but you know for sure what is in the mix. Instant Ocean Reef Crystal's all the way

Well technically we don't "really" know what is in the mix. Except the fact it is pharmaceutical grade or better(which even the cheap brands state). If all the cheap brands state pretty much the exact same values on the box as the big brands,,, then why are we not all buying the cheap ones???

I pretty sure but not a 100% but I think a company test's what is in the salt mix's but probably not the no name brand's cause there no name's. I think not sure thought.

I wo;; be sticking with Red Sea salt which i'm sure most of you will say is good enough!!

On another note, a sales rep i spoke to for a company that sells salt mix cheap and high price range (Red Sea being a mid range of theirs),,,said the main difference is the name of the company on the salt!!!
Anyone have any input on this statement???

i work at petco and I just buy the petco brand seasalt. I have had no problems with it and neither has my friend whos reef is a little further along than mine and judging by the growth of the corals id say they are getting all they need out of those trace elements...
ALso being an employee of petco I know that the "petco brand" is not really made by petco... they pay other bigger companies to put their own packaging on the product... so you get a superior product for less money
