Don't really need the skimmer.

If you'll be dosing, you won't be able to keep inverts...

Good luck!

I got an opportunity to pickup some live rock cheap for sale privately its still in tank with fish. It's got beautiful algae on it pink and redish. Will this speed up cycling process? It is Bali live rock. Thanks again...

Live rock straight from a running system to a new one usualy does help to speed up the process a little...

you can use your FX5 in a SW setup, but you gotta keep it clean. like a weekly breakdown and scrub up. i use a fluval 405 on my tank. i just run the sponge though, no other media. i basically use it for water movement. you could also run floss or phospate remover or something if you want. i dont in mine, but the option is there if i need it.

i realy on Live Rock for my filtration. and water changes. ive also recently been given a skimmer so thats in there too. but i ran my tank for a good while without a skimmer, with no negative effects. just keep an eye on your params.

you will want about 1-2 lbs of rock per gallon. but that amount can fluctuate. some rock is more porus than other rock, and there for lighter or heavier per cubic ft. if you can get lighter rock, get it, it has a larger surface area, and therefore more places for bacteria to live.

if you get the rock from the private seller, ask for a few handfulls of sand too. it will have all sorts of critters in it, and give your sand a 'live' boost too.

Bromie88 I had no idea you could get away with only using a sponge. Did you always just use the sponge and no media? That's some live rock you got.

yeah just sponge. like i said i dont even have floss in there. i realy heavily on my LR and sand as my filtration. for me the fluval 405 is just a big powerhead (+ added water volume). if you stock light, and dont overfeed, the LR will be able to deal with most, maybe all of the waste your fish create. waterchanges will take care of the rest. just make sure there is loads off flow and no dead spots.

skimmers will also help. no doubt about it. but i have run my tank without one and its been fine, WC's are just more important. i only use a skimmer now as ive been given one so even if its crap, or isnt big enough for my tank or bioload, it doesnt matter as every little helps.
