Salt or no salt?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't... I never have. I only use salt if it needs it for medicinal use. I have always used solar salt bought from Lowes. The "aquarium salt" from the petstore is the same thing, just ground finer.

There are some people that keep africans that will use salt, such as epsom salts and make a buffer, but even when I kept africans, I didn't even do that.

I find myself only really ever adding salt to my koi tank now a days- and that's because any little bump will cause an ulcer on them. They are way sensitive.

I use small amounts of salt with my cichlids i guess just because their colors seem to brighten just a lil bit with some salt. I only use about a tablespoon of api aquarium salt to every 4-5 gallons of water.
If you are doing this with water changes, bear in mind that only replace the salt for the amout of water that you remove. DO NOT replace salt for water that has evaporated, the water that evaporates does not take salt with it so if you add salt to the water you replace from evaporation you will slowly be increasing the salt level in your tank.

I catch myself putting non-iodized salt in all my tanks which consist of African cichlids and a Oscar. The colors come out so much and they seem happier I've been doing it for over 2 years.

i too use salt every water change.. however minimally... i think they do brighten up and perk up a bit. for the ebjd's , as sensitive as they are supposed to be.. i've just always added salt every water change as a preventative measure..

I don't use it in my tanks mainly because I don't have anything that actually really needs it and second because I hate the salt build up on the sump and filter areas of the tank.  Also, the salt that builds up elsewhere like the tops and other items is just not worth it to me.  Now, if I had something that required salt to survive in the tank, it would be different and that is why I stay away from those fish.

If one is having salt build up on surfaces i would guess they were using too much salt for their freshwater fish anyway. I have never had salt build up and i have been using salt in my tanks since i was a kid and had my first couple convicts. Now calcium build up thats another story i get that on all my tanks cuz we have pretty hard water here. I had a tank that was nearly brackish at one point and that had some salt build up but not too much.

I use to get a lot of salt build up on my 150g until Xmas came and she cracked on me, now I don't use as much salt as I use to because all my other tanks are small....1-65,1-55,1-30 and 2-10s

Well as an example of what i do.
My 75 gallon houses my Flowerhorn and i add 1 tablespoon of salt for every 5 gallons of water i change out. He has had that abount of salt since he was about 1" long now about a foot long and just a lil over 2 years old.

i use salt for every water change, where else are the fish going to get their electrolytes? haha guess its up to preference.
