Well as an example of what i do.
My 75 gallon houses my Flowerhorn and i add 1 tablespoon of salt for every 5 gallons of water i change out. He has had that abount of salt since he was about 1" long now about a foot long and just a lil over 2 years old.

What degree do u have him at? I use to have one also for 2 years and I left the heater on over night and his kok looked just like ur FH then the morning after it was huge.

What I also see that works is shells from the beach my African cichlids started to breed like crazy a week after I introduced the shells.
I also throw some in with my Oscar for that extra jump and I see no problems at all.

Salt all the way! I put huge amounts in all my tanks and even buy the 50lbs bags at Home Depot becuase I do use a lot. I raise all kinds of Cichla's but have several different catfish, flowerhorns, Tigers, and cichlids. I believe in salt hands down and have clean tanks and healthy fish and have never had problems with Ich and other parasites.

What's the deal with doing salt all the time? Just because your fish never get sick doesn't mean it's because of the salt.. My fish never get sick- and I don't use salt. Now, in the event of them getting a bump, scratch, illness- I only ever use salt- unless the salt won't help.

What people don't realize that by constantly using salt, you are creating salt resistant strains of bugs- so that is/when your fish get sick, you won't be able to use salt to clear it up. Not to mention that by constantly leaving your fish in a salted tank, you are slowly dehydrating your fish. Your fish has a freshwater osmosis system.. when you place your fish in salted water, what you don't know is that your fish has a lower salt concentration than the surrounding water. The water in the fish moves through the cells of the gills on the fish from the area of low salt concentration, to the area of high concentration- the result: dehydration.

I use varying amounts of salt, I do buy the water conditioner salt from Lowes. It does help with the slime coat, and keep the immune system up for the fish, I don't use a steady amount so that anything living in specific salt will have a hard time adjusting to the tanks, and it has little no effect on the fish. So there is anywhere from none to a handfull of salt in at anytime.

Salt is truly unnecessary.. I've stopped adding salt during water changes for about one year now & didn't notice any difference in the fish.. They never get sick too..
IMO, the key in keeping healthy fish is keep regular water changes for pristine water quality..

I want to make the colors of my fish more vibrant... think I should add a little bit of salt? (I have tiger barbs, a red tail shark, and a convict cichild)

Used to add salt, but now I don't. I find is unnecessary. There was no difference in my fish and they behave and look the same as they would with the salt.
