salt question?

I used it for years, just because i was told to. I stopped using it about a year ago, havent had a problem yet.

I've been keeping mainly the common SA,CA and lake malawi cichlids.

However, if i have an outbreak of ich i will be dosing with salt for sure.
 
I'll use it if I need it for a specific situation. Most of my fish are wild cought South American species from very soft acidic water and I don't like putting anything in the tank unless it's absolutely necessary. I have always thought, justifiably or not that using salt as prophylactic could create salt tolerant strains of pathogens that would otherwise be susceptible and thus requiring stronger and harsher meds then would otherwise be required. As stated earlier in this thread clean water, doing frequent water changes is the best preventative, that combined with good general filter maintenance and quarantine of new aquasitions will keep your tanks and fish healthy.
