Ok, I have had a freshwater tank for awhile but I like salt water fish better, they are more interesting and their coloring is neat. SO, I was wonder what I would need for 30 gal saltwater tank setup, I'm a noob if you cant tell also, the pros and cons of salt water fish vs fresh water fish. Thanks!
Oh, and it would be a little reef tank btw

Post that in the Saltwater section and you'll get better responses. Depending on what you want to keep, you'll need to;

-Switch your substrate to something like crushed coral
-Switch you decor to live rock (recommended over dead stuff)
-Buy salt
-Buy buy refractometer (recommended) or hydrometer (not so good) to measure salt levels.
-Swap the media in your filter to new stuff
-Change the light bulb to 10,000 k maybe

I've done the swap before, it's easy for some basic fish.

Pros are different fish and inverts, cons are maintainence is more complex.

This is a hobby and not a lifestyle.
so untrue.

i think that my freshwater fish are prettier than my saltwater fish. plus the fw tank is easier to maintain, and you can have more fw fish in a tank than you could have of sw fish in the same size tank.

GO SALTWATER more impressive then Fresh a little bit more pricey but well worth the time and investment.

F/W - more flexibility, lower start up cost, less on-going cost, avg maintenance schedule, more variety available, some beautiful some ugly fish

S/W - high start up cost, hi maintenance cost, more complex maintenance, more supplies needed, rookie mistakes very costly, can not have a lot of variety in 30gal (min. 55gal or more recommended), live rock/coral added dimensions, many beautiful but some ugly but very interesting fish

I love S/W - the beauty is fascinating, but can not commit the time & resource to it - already a discus tank is huge commitment in itself for me & I already have some tank issues. S/W losses would devastate me!

so good luck! for a 30 I say only 3-4 small to med. size fish + some nice live rock/coral would be a wonderful display.

Most of it's been covered accurately. I did SW for a few years. liked my fish, even had some breed. BUt in the end the cost/maint wasn't worth it to me. 30gal is abit on the small side. larger the water volume easier it is to stabalize imo and ime.. that size I'de do some live rock, maybe some mushrooms and a pair of clowns or some gobys. a shrimp, and thats about it. anything much more and your talking some heaftier care. I've found SW to be no more or less interesting the FW fish. and the colors imo are just different.. but no more or less intense then many FW fish. Thats why I like "oddball" FW fish. It cost me the same $ to set-up my 40 SW as it did to go with FW oddballs. except the FW oddballs had to be special ordered... and truth be told I enjoy my FW oddballs more then my SW set-up. To me saltwater is nice for a "liveing picture" but FW was more "interactive video game" for me. yes their are SW fish that are both attractive and interactive.. But a majority need far larger systems to live happily.

If you have the funds, and wish to venture. Do it. You can always go back.. or find your true love in the hobby. you won't know unless you explore.
