I've never done saltwater and I havent because it just seems like too much of a hassle to me.

Its expensive to start, expensive equipment, expensive fish
Its seems more complicated
Saltwater fish seem to be more fragile
Its messier.

I dont know. I may even be wrong. But from what I can tell, its just more time consuming, expensive blah blah blah

Agreed.

your dats are like feeders :)

Most people are scared of Saltwater. Its sad how people say its more work or its harder blah blah blah. 99% of people who have not had a SW tank know nothing of what they are talking about. I'll be first to admitt it can be a bit more expensive than freshwater. Though that depends on your spending habbits , your shopping skills and various other things. Skimmer, filtration, and salt in the water are the only things a saltwater NEEDS. Live sand and Live rock is not NEEDED. You say its expensive though right? I find Live rock cheaper than some of the stupid eheims you guys buy and it filters better than an ehiem.... Skimmer , you can ebay or craigslist these all day! Plus its just more filtration , how much do you spend on filtration. Live sand , keeps the ph more stable , and is a living breathing amonia nitrate eater. I keep salt and fresh. Salt is much more beautiful , much more fun to feed , and more rewarding sitting in front of it. Most of you can't say this because you dont have both. As far as work goes ... haha. FW i do weekly somtimes 2 times a week WC's. Once a month a SW tank requires water changes.... Mixing the salt takes almost no time , just grab a big bin and let it mix for 30 mins. I clean my filters maybe once every 3 months ..... change prefilters weekly or as needed. Skimmer dumps into a secondary collection cup that gets dump easily as need. I would say SW is less work. Also some corals dont require anymore light than a little shop light. They also dont require any speacial care either. Some do , but it all depends on how much you are into keeping corals. I have some in my tank and do nothing to them or for them. i use home depo strip lights..... They thrive quite nicely , i wanted them to get eaten for the longest time ... corals and SW fish are more hardier as well. My grouper can live in fresh or saltwater , hows that for hardiness!? I couldnt kill my fish in a toliet bowl. These generalized statements and bias comments are rediculous. I find a stable SW tank , less things could go wrong than a FW tank. SW has everything .... Bigger meaner fish. Prettier planted (corals). Beauty and an amazing piece of the ocean i your home. People wish they could go scuba diving and look at the reefs. I wouldnt dare jump into half the ponds or lakes/sewer systems some of the FW fish come from.

So i think the initially small cost of getting SW started is much more rewading. Feeding , cleaning , viewing , everything. I keep both , and i perfer my 10 gallon SW over my 180 FW. You may say i just dont keep the right fish but ive had them all , jardinis , aro , FH , O , Jags and much more. Salt is worth the jump. Quit being scared all of you.

Set up two 10 gallons.

One salt , one fresh. See which you like better.

Whilst I understand alot of what your saying, alot of it is still subjective.

For example in your opinion salt tanks are more beautiful. I could show you photos of the most amazing fresh tanks. I think as long as we all share common interests it's good to debate it though. I still would like to try salt one day and what you've said is reassuring, however I find alot of the freshwater fish I keep just "better" than the marine fish I see. I've never really seen many marine fish I wanted to keep and I've been to specialist shops and I have scubed. So at the end of the day personal preference but we will see what time brings...

lol example number #1

Ever thing people spend so much time on SW is because its more enjoyable to spend time on? I unfortuantly spend more on my freshwater. :( Though spend more gazing time infront of the SW.
Why did you take this so personal. It is a fact that SW is more expensive and more work than FW. I have had both and I don't have to have bags of salt on hand for fresh water, or barrels of pre mixed SW on hand for emergencies. FW wont put a coat of rock hard salt deposits on everything around the tank. Skimmers, UV lights live rock, there is a lot to keep up with. Now for those who enjoy it, it does not matter.

I have taken care of salt tanks and its not that hard but I have never started a salt tank because I thought that I couldn't afford it between salt, live, rock, and the constant up dating. Im just curious how big you salt tank is and how much you spend on salt compared to fresh every month?

Sorry for the hijack, hope this helps you also

You have to have kept both to understand both the pros and cons.

Saltwater is less maintaince than fresh, despite common belief. It can be a little difficult to get started, but once you've got it going you can sit back and relax.

The biggest pro in saltwater is what you can do. There is an endless list of fish to keep in saltwater, while most fresh "predator" tanks are pretty much the same thing, i.e. rays, arowana, tigs, catfish, cichlids, etc. In saltwater, there are enough different tanks to try to keep you going until you die!

The only major con is price- saltwater fish, and equipment in general are more expensive, but the reward is worth it. Some other cons include salt deposits, need for a skimmer, lighting requirements for some corals/etc, and needing to mix salt when doing a water change.

That's not to say fresh is bad, i love fresh myself, but seriously people, stop dissing saltwater! :p

And NO, you don't need corals, or even live rock in a saltwater tank!!! Although, they do look nice...

For the short time that I have been here I've read alot of Canucks posts and I don't feel that he took it personal he's just very blunt with what he says. Alot of us on here try to make sure we candy coat or posts Canuck however doesn't do this he just comes right out and says whats on his mind. I don't think there is anything wrong with this a lot of people may take what he says the wrong way because theres not a lot of people like him on here. I personally though his post was really good and brought up some really good points. An Canuck if your reading this love the fish from the link that eel just looks down right mean. I'd be scrared as hell to stick my hand in that tank!

most things you hear about salt aren't true.i dont test my water or anything. only thing i check for is the salinity. less water changes and in my opinion, better to look at. salt is expensive but in the end, it's worth it. everything they said you couldn't do in salt, i did it. so screw the majority!

Thanks man :headbang2 I like somone that can read personality through posts. I never got to tell you how much me and my girlfriend enjoy your avatar. Rooted for them when they came to dallas.

Though i was never aware most people dont like me .

The eel can be mean , though hes my big baby. He likes to be scratched and pet , and will lunge his body to my hand like a cat would. He's a goof.

I love fresh and love salt. I encourage everyone to give salt a try. I was once the person that was like , FRESH WATER FTW!!!! Then one day i traded in my 400$ stock gravel and all the goods. To get a little live rock some sand and a clown trigger. This was due to my girlfriend , she hates fresh. I couldn't believe i did it. I also find a fish is not right for you until you get it in your home. I find SW fish to have so much personality once you begin keeping them for a while. They are much smarter than freshwater and personable. I say this from experiance , not from opinion. Yes my oscars love to be fed and what not but man the mind a SW predator has. I have only been doing SW for 9 months!!!! Before that i knew nothing of it. My little 10 gallon with my snowflake eel. 55 gallon , week later 125 , then 180 , then 210 , now my new 12ft tank. I thought freshwater was addicting .... I was no expert , im still not. Saltwater turned my brain into a never ending sponge. I can't stop wanting to obsorb more!
