Salt water Canister on Freshwater tank

How do I check for stray voltage? That might be a possibility. I went to a reliable lfs today and they hypothesized that the debris that came out of the filter might have had hydrogen sulfide in it from water staying in the motor/impellor area for so long. The debris was a greyish cloud so that might be a possibility however I dont remember smelling any rotten eggs.
I washed everything out with water

I have switched over many filters and tanks from salt to fresh, and never had a problem. Don't see salt deposits causing the death.

I also don't see it being stray voltage, I have seen equipment malfunction quite a bit, heaters, filters, powerheads, and have been electrocuted many times from old equipment in the fish department I work in, and have no problems with the fish.

to add to that my dwarf puffer was gasping at the surface which I assumed was nitrite poisoning but all my parameters were fine which leads me to beleive it was the hydrogen sulfide

Did you replace the bio-media or put colonized media in the filter? You may have initiated a cycle if you removed the colony with the old filter( assuming the "new" one was a replacement.)

I replaced all the filter media, washed everything out save for the impellor and motor, and soaked the tubing, container, and compartments for a few days and rinsed them out. My parameters are fine so I dont think it was a mini cycle that did it.
What other filtration did you have running?
You said you replaced your HOB, was that the only filter?
From your description and lack of any real information on your water specs. I`m leaning towards your tank went into a “new tank” cycle.
Nothing mini about it.

Well that was my first thought, the hob filter was the only filter at the moment, however I checked the parameters and everything was fine. too add to that I only had one fish in the tank that was completly stocked with plants. I'm sure the amount of bioload of one dwarf puffer could have been handled by the plants. I checked my parameters before and after, and there were no measurable ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate
