Salt water ick treatment

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a problem.... :( what if the shark is the one with ick?

SUGGESTED TREATMENTS
There are two proven methods for the treatment of Marine "Ich", which are copper and hyposalinity. Neither the copper or hyposalinity methods can be used in the presence of elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) or invertebrates, so treatment must be performed in a seperate quarantine tank.

Most wild fish are exposed to low levels of this parasite but are able to effectively fight off the infection without becoming seriously ill. Plainly, a longer term treatment is necessary - a treatment that assures us that there will be a potent dose of medication in the water until every last parasite in the aquarium has gone through all stages of development and finally killed as a swarmer.

Elasmo species don't typically suffer from Cryptocaryon irritans (there is no such thing as marine ich as "ich" refers to a freshwater parasite Ichthyophthirius multifilis.)
However, they can carry it. You can freshwater dip most elasmos without issues to make sure they aren't going to introduce it into a tank with fish. Some fair better than others, but most can be done for a few minutes as long as temp and pH are matched and you keep a lot of oxygen in the water.
