when i was first getting into fishkeeping, i too really wanted a mantis tank, so i did quite a bit of research, what kind of mantis shrimp are you looking to get?

Not sure yet. Was looking at the clown mantis and the green ones.

you can use kelp or live rock

Sweet, I bet I could make my own kelp extract for my aquaponics.

"Kelp" might be misleading.

Whoever said that is probably referring to macro algaes...not the kelp you think of when you think about the west coast of the united states etc.

Live rock will provide nitrifying bacteria with a place to live, but not actually clean your water in any way, shape, form or kind.
