Salt water project start

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just skimmed over some of the other posts...but have the generally idea of whats being said here. So:

+1 for the skimmer. You dont want the surface of your tank to have a film, which it will if you dont. Another thing is that these are super important period. I dont have any other form of filtration...I would just use the penguin for some chemical filtration, throw either purigen or chemipure in there. If your serious about reefing, you will be feeding your corals when it comes to the point where the skimmer is removing so much food that they cant survive. I have a HEAVILY stocked tank...with basically "perfect" water quality, my SPS grow like mad...and I Skim a ton.

One thing that I have always wanted...and always will want...is nicer lights. I originally bought PC, then when I upgraded...I got MH. The thing I didnt do was get t5 with the MH so my 10k that I use is a little white for me, and some of my corals dont show their best colors.

+1 for live rock cycle...there is so much dead stuff on this rock you will be OVER cycled. I doubt that your tank will produce that much nitrogen ever again in its life. One little fish that you might kill isnt worth it when your already putting all that dead stuff in there.

Lastly...is it just me, or does blacksharks post mess with your eyes?

Your just removing food for your corals by skimming. You seem like someone who knows what they are doing. You should read up on the algea scrubber and give it a try. Your corals would have a constant food supply and thrive a lot better.

TheCanuck when you say algea scrubber are you refering to the scarper with a handle or something else. I went to the LFS to check out somethings you guys had said and asked about the scrubber and thats what they pointed me to. If not could you post a link to what your talking about?

Most people on here know more than anyone that works at an lfs. Soak it in :D

So, its a DIY project... I wonder if anyone has tried to make them for sale to the public

If not I see room for a MFKer to make some money :D

I'll see if I can start getting some of the items needed and start building one myself

Because of the difference in font colors, blacksharks post seemed to "pop" when I read it...it was weird, like a 3d thing. Long week I guess.

With skimming being my only filtration I guess it goes "Your going to live by the gun, your gunna die by the gun." I cant afford to let much stuff sit and die in the tank. I feed my fish with selecon inriched mysis, newlife spectrum, and so my corals get some of that, plus fish poo. I also feed with coral frenzy coral food every other day. I turn off my skimmer for 45 mintues while the powerheads circulate it around.

Would I maybe get more food to them if I didnt skim? Yes probably...but I dont really see how it would be worth it. They get enough food...and my water quality is great.

I love DIY, and I love improving my tank. I have thought about algae scrubbers in the past, but just dont have much room. Remember, you are talking to the guy who doesnt even have a sump here. :(

Oh well. I have been meaning to put up a thread about my tank...but I just cant seem to get it just the way I want it. I promise...a thread is coming. :D

Hey man as long as you know to turn your skimmer off and accommodate around the issue. Which it sounds like you do. Maybe it could be a future build for the next tank:naughty: You know where all just a craigslist adds away from buying another tank

BTW i admire the LR and Skimmer only tank. Always wanted one, just with my monsters the cost of that live rock would be crazy... that eel dumps 2lbs of poopy lol
