Salt Water vs. Fresh Water let the debate begin

Freshwater IMO for many reasons.

1) Freshwater is cheaper

2) More diversity (most saltwater fish are reef fish, freshwater fish come from lakes, streams, rivers, ditches, coldwater, warm water, caves etc.) Keep in mind that around 42% of all the worlds known fish are freshwater, that is a lot considering only one percent of all water on the planet is freshwater.

3) Most saltwater fish are wild caught, sometimes through very destructive means.

4) Saltwater is more difficult to maintain

5) The color of the fish. This one may seem odd but it is true. Freshwater fish can pretty much change color, healthy fish display wonderful color and it changes with their mood. You can often tell if a freshwater fishkeeper is doing good or not based on color. Saltwater fish on the other hand always display the same color no matter what.

With all that said, I would like to try a salt tank some day but there are soooo many freshwater fish that come higher on my list than any saltwater.
Salt water fish change color also when they are stressed,or poor quality water. :D

I have never done this so anybody see any flaws or missed items please chime in. this is for Dezel's 10g nano question, he has the tank.
20"hood and sho compact power flouresent light $40
air pump $10
air driven miniskimmer $15
heater $15
40-50gph hang on filter $40
15 lbs arogonite or crushed coral $18
16-20 lbs select live rock $70
enough marine salt mix and buffers and conditioner for filling the tank 5 times $20
refractometer and various test kits $60
thermometer $2
2 blue legged hermits $4
2 peppermint shrimp $6
5 astrea turbo snails $5
a pair of neon gobies $25
1 court jester goby $25
total= $355

I think that I would stick to FW for now.

Some of these things are not needed, like your skimmer,hang-on filter, select live rock(get 15 lbs. of base and 1 lb. select)and the 1 goby(overstocked).buy your cleaning inverts as a package and save $.As a good rule reef tanks cost around 10 to 12 $ per gal.if you seek out the thrifty way,if you dont you can pretty much double or even triple that figure.A natural reef system should be self contained and pretty much self sufficent.Oh yeah Rweedon, the whole idea of a nano reef is to look at the small things that get overlooked in a large tank, theres alot more to it than just the fish.I've seen nanos that dont even contain fish at all and those were just as interesting as any tank I've seen large or small.

OK I think you guys know where I stand on this....... FW. I like the interaction of my fish and I like seeing them spawn and raise the fry.

You salt guys have a harder row to hoe so my hat goes off to you but I don't want to keep fish that have to be nearly posioned to be cought but thats just me.

Look at me .... a gun toating pit bull shooting guy that catches bugs and puts them outside because I feel bad for killing them. :screwy:

Thats why you only buy fish that are captive breed or from a FS that belongs to m.a.c ( marine aquarium council) This insures that they were not poisoned. Its is important to do your research on any animal that you plan to keep and the fact that it is difficult should affect your decision,if you dont have the time to feed your dog and let it out to s**t then maybe you shouldnt have a dog.I absolutely HATE the way people think, like if they have the money than thats all thats important, not that they cant take care of thier responsibility ."Oh if it dies I'll just get another one mentallity"this is complete BS.So people please use some F**king brains, dont buy an arowanna for a 50 gal.,dont try to put 5 of em in a 100 gal.if you cant afford to feed it dont buy it, an if you dont have the time to spend on it dont buy it .I would like to treat people like animals get treated just once,I bet you would see an instant change.

sorry,a little :topic:

Can't believe so many angry people!

Well, back to topic.

The problem with saltwater keeping for me are the hard corals, and reef tanks. This is the ultimate hobby in my opinion. But you have to be the fish store itself to keep this kind of tank because it requires alot of attention, and girlfriends and wives would be jealous of. You would need about $5000 to start a setup because of the equipment it requires. And so many people are so unsuccessful in keeping this type of setup, that they resort to using the ultraviolet light. In addition, all the maintenance involved in keeping this setup, plus the energy bill costs. I mean, those metal halide lights are what...1000 watts? Something like that, and you would need enough to get all the way down to the bottom to supplement the hard corals. Blah blah blah blah blah.....BUT the rewards are amazing, is it worth it?

I think that Between the two I prefer fresh water. It is more forgiving. You can accidentally suck all the water out of your tank and refill it and not lose any fish. (not that I recomend you do that, my bala shark didn't like that very much, but the Bichir didn't really care)

Salt water is more expensive to start, and the fish are harder to get a hold of. but if you can do either well, I think that they are both just as rewarding.

Thanks bullhead! It is nice to know I can get cheaper on a nano, which goby would you not get, a neon or the courtjester, I don't care much for damsels. Fish are fishfood has got a great SW local tank and I have kept coolwater brackish locals cheaply but until I haveserious money to spend I will play in the fresh water side. I do want a 180g-225g with a panther grouper, a lionfish, and a snowflake or maybe zebra moray in a FOWL set up.
I like both SW and FW fish but I tend to look at the money first.

The only thing I don't like about salt water is the simple fact that there is only a few reptiles you can keep in it and most are NO-NO species so to say (sea turtles, saltwater crocs, and marine iguana. None of which I would keep)
I have kept both types of tanks and have loved both of them. My next big tank is going to be a marine reef. I have yet to do a reef tank so I might sway to the salt side in a while. For now though, I'm a fresh type of guy. Actually, I'm about to do a planted tank. :grinyes:

out of your choices I'd get rid of the courtjester and keep the pair of neons. If I were to have a choice I go for a pair of firefish or a symbiotic shrimp goby like a yellow watchman goby or a hi fin red banded goby but thats just me. :naughty:

I'm not as angry now either, but be very, very careful.
